How did
you get into broadcasting?
After
walking miles in the snow, I made it to my interview for a
news internship at Z102 radio. I was disappointed to find
out that there were no internships available, but floored
when I was offered a part time position doing marketing
research! I did that for six months until I became the
official “Sticker Drop” girl, driving around in the Z102
van, doing live call-ins and announcing my “secret” location
to all of Austin for a chance at some really cool prizes.
After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with
a degree in Broadcast Journalism, I was promoted to a full
time position as the co-host to the highest rated show in
town at our sister station 96.7 KHFI. My name then changed
to Pebblez with a “Z” and I became a part of the “Bo Nasty
and Pebblez” night show rated number one from 7p to 12a. My
former co-host now goes by “Lukas” and is my number one
friend on “Top 8” on my My Space page.
Background Info:
Believe
it or not…and most people don’t, I use to be pretty shy and
in some situations I still am! I credit my mom for helping
me lose my fear of being in front of people. One day while
we were shopping at the mall, she saw a sign for model
tryouts for a fashion show and told me I should be doing
that. So I gave it a shot and out of hundreds of people I
was one of the 25 selected to participate in the Willowbrook
Mall “Back to School Fashion Show.” It was a high I will
never forget and it gave me the confidence to pursue a
career in entertainment. Since then I have been able to
earn a paycheck doing shows, print work, commercials and
film. I thank my mom for all she taught me….she passed away
a few years ago and is truly loved and missed!
Hitting
the Small Screen:
I have
also worked in television at K-EYE TV 42 in Austin as a
Publicity Director and TV host, along with a stint at News
24 Houston (before they pulled the plug) where I did Midday
Traffic and had my own entertainment feature, “Hip
Houston.” Back in Austin, I also hosted and produced a show
called “Street Trax,” where I interviewed famous celebrities
from music and film. I have been a media volunteer to both
the Austin and Houston SPCA’s. Here in Houston I help host
the annual SPCA telethon on KHWB 39.
I have
also attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in
Hollywood. While I was there, I tried out for a spot on the
“Weakest Link” game show and made it onto one o their radio
specialty shows. I wasn’t the winner or the weakest link….I
was the runner up!!!! I got many e-mails from across the
country because people felt I was cheated, getting harder
questions than the girl that won! I enjoyed my 15 minutes
of fame and till this day, people come up to me and say they
wish I had won…..yeah me too. Some of my other really big moment include,
auditioning for a role as a reporter in “Spy Kids 2,” two
call backs for the “Real World” (one at the MTV studios in
New York) and as a reporter for the game show “Jeopardy.”
I’m “Meg” in the independent film, “Clean People” which has
won a few awards. You can check it out at royboyfilms.com.
But never fear, I’ll nail that important audition in due
time.
Most
asked question...Where are you from?
I’m
including this because I literally get asked everyday and I
love answering it but I think some people are afraid to
ask…so here goes: I was born in Trinidad, it’s a beautiful
Caribbean island with crystal blue waters, white sands,
diverse cultures and amazing food. My great grandparents on
both sides migrated there many years ago from India making
me the third generation in my family to be born there. I
moved to New York with my family when I was a baby and I
have also lived in Austin and briefly in Slidell, Louisiana.
